about
2020 was spent largely at home with my family, quarantining, and social distancing, and getting by. We were working from home, learning from home, playing from home; and while we were so, so fortunate to have each other and our happy home in sunny Los Angeles, we, like so many people, missed all that we had taken for granted in our previous life: seeing friends and family, enjoying going out in public, playing and seeing live music. So many things.
This song, "Desperate Middle Class Blues", was written directly from that experience. The days blend in to one another as we become rooted in our isolated routine, the smallest details being blown into distorted proportions. We rely on humanity's greatest super power, adaptability. We are sad and we laugh, just like we always have, but maybe with something a bit more desperate. Through all of last year and (I fear) well into this, we appreciate all we have and we celebrate any opportunity we can take to share with others.
It was recorded live to that sweet old TEAC reel-to-reel tape machine stolen from the Handsome Lady Records Clubhouse in Greenpoint, NY, those many years ago. If you listen closely, you can hear Lola, our sweet pup, singing along (she was fairly out of key).
lyrics
Each week exactly like the other
Each month flowing past me just like water
Each year begins and ends I can’t be bothered
When each day’s exactly the same
I wake up, too early to feel rested
I look down at my phone hoping something will impress me
I look back up, is it bedtime already
When each day’s exactly the same
Oh, I’m an autumn leaf
Waiting for the right time
To let go and catch the breeze
I’ve got no reason to fear
I’m a passive passenger
I let the universe steer
I got a wife, she’s somewhere in this house
We talk from time to time, at least I think we move our mouths
We’ve got a kid, don’t want him to have my doubts
When each day’s exactly the same
I got a job, I work to pay the bank
When I get a little extra I put it in the tank
Got an inflatable pool, guess my life is pretty swank
When each day’s exactly the same
I’m an egg in a nest
Warm and cozy
Beneath a mama bird’s breast
I’m a pebble on the beach
If I wait here long enough
I’m sure that something will find me
Each week exactly like the other
Each month flowing past just like water
Each year begins and ends I can’t be bothered
When each day’s exactly the same
